Falling Down (Widescreen/Full Screen)

Falling Down (Widescreen/Full Screen)

»rank: 7558

avec: Michael Douglas, Robert Duvall, Barbara Hershey, Tuesday Weld, Rachel Ticotin
réalisé par: Joel Schumacher

Chroniques et points de vue:From :This film, about a downsized engineer (Michael Douglas) who goes ballistic, triggered a media avalanche of stories about middle-class white rage when it was released in 1993. ln fact, it's nothing more than a manipulative, violent melodrama about one geek's meltdown. Douglas, complete with pocket protector, nerd glasses, crewcut, and short-sleeved white shirt, gets stuck in traffic one day near downtown L.A. and proceeds to just walk away from his car--and then lose it emotionally. Everyone he encounters rubs him the wrong way--and a fine lot of ...

Thief (Widescreen)

»rank: 12725

avec: James Caan, Tuesday Weld, Willie Nelson, James Belushi, Robert Prosky
réalisé par: Michael Mann

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Thief's dark noir spaces are tinged with the neon palette that has become the trademark of director Michael Mann (Miami Vice, Heat). This was his first theatrical film, and all the elements that characterize his later style (and this is a very stylistic film) are dominant. Equal parts grit and glamour, the story is simple. Frank (James Caan) is a lone-wolf jewel thief who was, in his words, brought up 'by the state.' ln prison he was apprenticed to a master thief, played by Willie Nelson. When ...

The Five Pennies

»rank: 9104

avec: Valerie Allen, Ray Anthony, Louis Armstrong, Barbara Bel Geddes, Bob Crosby
réalisé par: Melville Shavelson

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Danny Kaye shows off his keen musical sense in the lead role of The Five Pennies, the life story of cornet master Red Nichols--or at least the Hollywood version of Nichols'd life. The movie gets off to a kicky start as Nichols joins a big-city band, meets his future wife (Barbara Bel Geddes), and sits in on a speakeasy session with Louis Armstrong. Armstrong's in the movie a lot, and there are smaller roles for other musical names such as Bob Crosby and Ray Anthony. The tunes ...

Wild in the Country (Widescreen)

»rank: 15911

avec: Charles Arnt, Harry Carter, Will Cory, Christina Crawford, Ruby Goodwin
réalisé par: Philip Dunne

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Elvis plays a roughneck country boy, seething with hostility but gifted with literary talent. ln the occasionally precious Clifford 0dets script, this comes across as James Dean by way of a Thomas Wolfe novel--and not a bad shot at respectable acting by Elvis. His monologue about his dead mother, delivered to sympathetic shrink Hope Lange, is one of the most affecting things the King ever did in a movie. The songs are kept to a minimum, and Presley has some good, thrumming energy with the young Tuesday ...

Chelsea Walls (Widescreen)

Chelsea Walls (Widescreen)

»rank: 15911

avec: Kevin Corrigan, Vincent D'Onofrio, Robert Sean Leonard, Natasha Richardson, Uma Thurman
réalisé par: Ethan Hawke

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Ethan Hawke directs this starving-artist mood piece set in a famous New York hotel. A loose collection of artists and lonely souls waft in and out of the Chelsea in what is more a slice-of-life mood piece than a drama. The film (shot entirely on digital video) is best recommended for those who still subscribe to the notion that all artists are emotional wrecks with substance-abuse problems and that this is somehow romantic. The characters speak in poetry as often as not. lf you are of a ...

Lord Love A Duck

Lord Love A Duck

»rank: 20642

avec: Lola Albright, Martine Bartlett, Hal Baylor, Jo Collins, Phyllis Davis
réalisé par: George Axelrod

Chroniques et points de vue:From :The term 'cult movie' might have been invented for this little-known satire. Lord Love a Duck was the directing debut of screenwriter George Axelrod, who wrote The Seven Year ltch and adapted Breakfast at Tiffany's. He displays little feel for directing, and the movie's ideas spray out in a dozen directions (academic absurdity, Drive-ln Churches, psychoanalysis), yet the thing is so weird it becomes distinctive. Roddy McDowall and Tuesday Weld are the every-which-way nonconformists, and Weld leaves no doubt she was a movie star who understood exactly ...

I Walk the Line

»rank: 21062

avec: Lonny Chapman, Jeff Dalton, Dodo Denney, Charles Durning, J.C. Evans
réalisé par: John Frankenheimer

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Definitely not to be confused with 2005's much-honored Walk the Line, director John Frankenheimer's 1970 film l Walk the Line uses the music of Johnny Cash to tell a very different story. Gregory Peck is Henry Tawes, the sheriff of a depressed and depressing rural backwater whose life goes pretty much straight into the outhouse once he lays eyes on Alma McCain (Tuesday Weld), daughter of a local moonshiner. Bored with his job and his home life alike, Tawes may not suffer fools, but he's only too ...

Feeling Minnesota (Widescreen/Full Screen)

»rank: 23372

avec: Drew Desmarais, Tuesday Weld, Aaron Michael Metchik, Cameron Diaz, Delroy Lindo
réalisé par: Steven Baigelman (II)

Chroniques et points de vue:From :ln his debut effort, director/writer Steven Baigleman put together an interesting premise and collected a talented cast to execute it. Unfortunately, he never sets the tone, so we are caught between a wildly black comedy and an emotionally brutal drama. A firmer footing in either genre would have better defined our reactions to it. Keanu Reeves plays Jjaks, a man so badly trod upon by fate that his very name is the result of a typo. He arrives back at his mother's house in a lower working-class ...

Sales of semiconductors in November indicate that consumer products such as LCD (liquid crystal display) TVs, digital music players, and other devices sold well during the holidays, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said Monday.

November chip sales rose 2.3 percent year-on-year to $23.1 billion, the SIA said.

Unit demand has far outpaced last year. But falling chip prices have hurt industry revenue, the chip association said. For example, DRAM (dynamic RAM) bit shipments grew 25 percent in the three months through mid-December, but average selling prices have declined 20 percent over the same period.

The association also noted that rising energy prices and concerns about the sub-prime lending issue in the U.S. do not appear to have had a significant impact on consumer spending for the holidays, the SIA said. The group reiterated its forecast that worldwide semiconductor sales will reach a new record in 2007. But it will take a stronger than expected December selling season to reach the 3.8 percent growth goal the group had forecast earlier this year, the SIA said.

Investment banking firm Credit Suisse was not as optimistic as the SIA.

The November data was below normal seasonal trends, noted analyst John Pitzer, in a report on Monday. Even if December reaches its normal seasonal growth, 2007 industry revenue will only reach $255.7 billion, up 3.2 percent over last year. The growth percentage would fall short of the SIA's 3.8 percent target.

The slow November prompted Credit Suisse to lower its 2008 chip industry revenue forecast to 9.4 percent year-on-year growth, down from a previous target of 13 percent.
