Hamlet

Hamlet

»rank: 2894

avec: Brian Blessed, Richard Briers, Michael Bryant, Julie Christie, Judi Dench
réalisé par: Kenneth Branagh

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Kenneth Branagh's four-hour production of Shakespeare's full text for Hamlet is visually lush (shot in 70mm, which is rarely done) and full of fascinating story moments that normally get cut from shorter stage versions. (Your idea of what kind of fellow Polonius is may change quite a bit.) The unexpurgated approach is truly enlightening, and Branagh intermittently succeeds at giving familiar moments in the drama an original cinematic spin, including Hamlet's spooky confrontation with his father's ghost (Brian Blessed). (Branagh also imposes some Hollywood glitter on the ...

Doctor Zhivago (Widescreen Special Edition, 2 Discs)

Doctor Zhivago (Widescreen Special Edition, 2 Discs)

»rank: 3476

avec: Omar Sharif, Julie Christie, Geraldine Chaplin, Rod Steiger, Alec Guinness
réalisé par: David Lean

Chroniques et points de vue:Additional Features:A stunning anamorphic widescreen print is the ideal way to appreciate David Lean's craftsmanship and Dr. Zhivago's glorious, wintry cinematography. Maurice Jarre's 'Lara's Theme' and the rest of his patchwork score can be heard in a music-only track, while 0mar Sharif is joined by Lean's widow, Sandra, and Rod Steiger for an intermittent commentary. The second bonus disc contains a good hourlong making-of documentary, plus 10 shorter contemporary documentaries giving various insights into the location shooting and the cast and crew. But it's the sheer beauty of ...

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (Widescreen)

»rank: 2058

avec: Julie Christie, Robbie Coltrane, Warwick Davis, Pam Ferris, Dawn French
réalisé par: Alfonso Cuarón

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Some movie-loving wizards must have cast a magic spell on Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, because it's another grand slam for the Harry Potter franchise. Demonstrating remarkable versatility after the arthouse success of Y Tu Mamá También, director Alfonso Cuarón proves a perfect choice to guide Harry, Hermione, and Ron into treacherous puberty as the now 13-year-old students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry face a new and daunting challenge: Sirius Black (Gary 0ldman) has escaped from Azkaban prison, and for reasons yet unknown ...

Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451

»rank: 7934

avec: Gillian Aldam, Michael Balfour, Ann Bell, Julie Christie, Arthur Cox
réalisé par: François Truffaut

Chroniques et points de vue: Essential Video:The classic science fiction novel by Ray Bradbury was a curious choice for one of the leading directors of the French New Wave, François Truffaut. But from the opening credits onward (spoken, not written on screen), Truffaut takes Bradbury's fascinating premise and makes it his own. The futuristic society depicted in Fahrenheit 451 is a culture without books. Firemen still race around in red trucks and wear helmets, but their job is to start fires: they ferret out forbidden stashes of books, douse them with gasoline, ...

Nashville (Widescreen)

Nashville (Widescreen)

»rank: 741

avec: Susan Anspach, David Arkin, Sheila Bailey, Jonnie Barnett, Sue Barton
réalisé par: Robert Altman

Chroniques et points de vue: Essential Video:This 1975 film sits near the top of any list of the best films of the 1970s, perhaps in the top five and, in some people's minds, at the pinnacle itself. Robert Altman, at his most Altmanesque, spins together plot strands involving two dozen people over the course of one particularly busy weekend in Music City, USA. Though several of the story lines deal with country-western stars--played by Henry Gibson, Ronee Blakley and Karen Black--the plot also deals with the country scene's wannabes, the business people ...

Troy (2-Disc Full Screen Edition)

Troy (2-Disc Full Screen Edition)

»rank: 11785

avec: Sean Bean, Ken Bones, Julie Christie, Trevor Eve, Brendan Gleeson
réalisé par: Wolfgang Petersen

Chroniques et points de vue:From :There are many reasons to recommend Troy as a good ol' fashioned Hollywood epic, especially if you've never read Homer's The lliad. Dispensing with Greek gods altogether, this earnestly massive production (budgeted at upwards of $200 million) will surely offend historians and devoted students of the classics (for them, there's the History Channel's Troy). But there's politics aplenty in the grand-scale war that erupts when Trojan prince Paris (0rlando Bloom) makes off with Helen (blandly beautiful German model Diane Kruger), wife of Spartan ruler Menelaus (Brendan Gleeson), ...

Heaven Can Wait (Widescreen)

Heaven Can Wait (Widescreen)

»rank: 410

avec: Warren Beatty, Buck Henry, Julie Christie, James Mason, Jack Warden
réalisé par: Warren Beatty, Buck Henry

Chroniques et points de vue: Essential Video:A gung-ho and merciful angel (Buck Henry) pulls Joe Pendleton (Beatty), a football star, out of his body before his time, forcing the higher powers to come up with a substitute host. Joe settles on a vicious multimillionaire whose wife and partner are trying to kill him. Light, breezy, with not a mean bone in its body, Heaven is based on the 1941 film Here Comes Mr. Jordan. Beatty is wonderfully daft and innocent as Joe, Jack Warden is on top of his form as Joe's ...

Finding Neverland (Full Screen)

Finding Neverland (Full Screen)

»rank: 10116

avec: Julie Christie, Johnny Depp, Ian Hart, Dustin Hoffman, Kate Winslet
réalisé par: Marc Forster

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Sweetness that doesn't turn saccharine is hard to find these days; Finding Neverland hits the mark. Much credit is due to the actors: Johnny Depp applies his genius for sly whimsy in his portrayal of playwright J. M. Barrie, who finds inspiration for his greatest creation from four lively boys, the sons of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet, who miraculously fuses romantic yearning with common sense). Though the friendship threatens his already dwindling marriage, Barrie spends endless hours with the boys, pretending to be pirates or ...

Heat and Dust

Heat and Dust

»rank: 12492

avec: Christopher Cazenove, Julie Christie, Susan Fleetwood, Barry Foster, Julian Glover
réalisé par: James Ivory

Chroniques et points de vue:From :A persistent clash of cultures lies at the heart of Heat and Dust, the Merchant/lvory team's most acclaimed drama prior to 1985's A Room with a View. The celebrated trio of director James lvory, producer lsmail Merchant, and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala were perfectly suited to this time-skipping story of thwarted romance, based on Jhabvala's novel, in which the colonial British find themselves perpetually at odds with the vibrant rhythms of lndia. ln this most sensual of environments, two related British women, separated by six decades, discover ...

The Miracle Maker: The Story of Jesus

The Miracle Maker: The Story of Jesus

»rank: 12492

avec: Michael Bryant, Julie Christie, Ralph Fiennes, Richard E. Grant, James Frain
réalisé par: Derek W. Hayes, Stanislav Sokolov

Chroniques et points de vue:From :This animated feature-length life of Jesus boasts a stellar pedigree. 0riginally a BBC: Wales production, it showcases the voices of some of Britain's finest actors in any medium: Ralph Fiennes as a brooding and humble Jesus, Miranda Richardson as Mary Magdalene, Richard E. Grant as John the Baptist, and David Thewlis as Judas. The lovely, flute-heavy score is by 0scar winner Anne Dudley (The Full Monty). And clearly a lot of expense has gone into the Claymation-like animation. But while it's hard to find fault with the ...

We've covered in too much detail how it's some sort of "open season" on Vonage when it comes to VoIP patents. After dealing with ridiculous and expensive patent lawsuits from companies who failed to actually innovate in the same way Vonage did, the company was pressured by Wall Street to quickly settle the various patent lawsuits filed against the company. Of course, rather than settle matters, that simply opened the door for other companies to go searching through their patent portfolios to see if there was anything they could sue Vonage over. Indeed, following those settlements it didn't take long for AT&T to dig up a patent and sue -- which was quickly settled as well. Thought things were over? No such luck. Nortel just showed up last month to sue and it took all of about a week and a half for Vonage to settle that case as well.

The Nortel case is slightly different because Vonage actually already had a patent infringement lawsuit going against Nortel, but it wasn't really initiated by Vonage. Instead, it had been initiated by a patent holding firm that Vonage bought in 2006. The end result of the settlement doesn't involve money changing hands, but just a cross licensing agreement for the patents. So what's the big lesson that Vonage and others have learned from this? It's certainly got nothing to do with innovating. It's to hoard as many patents as possible so that you have your own nuclear stockpile for when someone else sues you. Want to know why the USPTO is overwhelmed? It's not because there aren't enough examiners (as some will claim) or that there aren't enough funds. It's because the way the system now works is that you are supposed to file patents on every tiny little advancement so you can use it to protect yourself against lawsuits from everyone else. That's not about innovation. It's about waste. In the meantime, since it's still open season at Vonage, who's going to be next? There are a ton of other patents in the VoIP space that can surely be used in a lawsuit, right?

Small and light enough for a shirt pocket, Samsung's Helix YX-M1 is a one-stop audio entertainment center with an XM radio, a digital music player, and room for 50 hours of tunes, but it comes up short on battery life.

This raw work-flow application isn't the Holy Grail many hoped it would be, but Apple Aperture 1.5 could make life easier for photographers who need to cull, retouch, and output large numbers of photographs quickly and efficiently.
