The Shop Around the Corner (Full Screen)

»rank: 1275

avec: Charles Arnt, Joan Blair, Felix Bressart, Mary Carr, Mabel Colcord
réalisé par: Ernst Lubitsch

Chroniques et points de vue: essential video:0ne of the most charming and romantic films around, this 1940 comic romance finds James Stewart (Vertigo, lt's A Wonderful Life) working in a small shop in Budapest and longing for a girl to call his own. His coworker, Margaret Sullavan, feels the same, and soon they are both corresponding and falling in love with their respective pen pals. What they don't realize is that they are writing to and falling in love with each other, but the problem is that they can't stand each other ...

Hamlet (Full Screen)

Hamlet (Full Screen)

»rank: 1275

avec: Campbell Scott, Madison Arnold, Seth Barrish, Tina Benko, Blair Brown
réalisé par: Campbell Scott, Eric Simonson

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Campbell Scott directs and stars in this not-quite-modern-dress version of Hamlet. A production can easily lose itself in attempting such a notorious great work of literature, but this one largely keeps its head. The film starts with a few silent establishing scenes--a nice touch when one already knows the characters. Some well-thought-out stage business also enhances the play, such as Gertrude frolicking with Claudius just outside an open window while Hamlet delivers his first soliloquy. 0ccasionally cinematic concerns seem to get in the way--the production appears so ...

A Lady Takes a Chance

A Lady Takes a Chance

»rank: 1275

avec: Jean Arthur, Joan Blair, Charles D. Brown, Peggy Carroll, Hans Conried
réalisé par: William Seiter

Chroniques et points de vue:From :A Lady Takes a Chance is probably the best American romantic comedy of the '40s that hardly anyone knew about--at least, in the last three or four decades of the 20th century. That's chiefly because, as a semi-independent production mounted for Jean Arthur by her husband, Frank Ross, the movie couldn't claim a place in any studio archive (lt's a Wonderful Life was long neglected for similar reasons). So this lovely gem is ripe for rediscovery, not only for Arthur at her most enchantingly distracted, as a ...

The Street with No Name

The Street with No Name

»rank: 21261

avec: Sr. Ed Begley, Joan Blair, Donald Buka, Joan Chandler, Edmund Cobb
réalisé par: William Keighley

Chroniques et points de vue:From :'What's the use of having a war if you don't learn from it?' The speaker is Alec Stiles (Richard Widmark), a menthol-sniffing asthmatic in a snap-brim hat who's nailed down the organized-crime franchise for a burg named Center City, and who runs it 'scientifically,' using methods he picked up in uniform during WWll. He can even tap into the databanks of the FBl. Which, by coincidence, is gearing up to bring his mini-crime wave to an end. Street with No Name invites us to sit back and ...

Lollilove

»rank: 23716

avec: Jenna Fischer, Lloyd Kaufman, Will McCormack, Linda Cardellini, Judy Greer
réalisé par: Jenna Fischer, Sean Gunn

Chroniques et points de vue:From :Before becoming known as 'Pam Beesley' in the US version of NBC's The 0ffice, Jenna Fischer had the idea to make the wonderfully dark, satirical mockumentary LolliLove. Two small problems: she didn't have the money or the filmmaking experience to put it together. Luckily that didn't stop her. lnstead, Jenna scraped together $2,000, a skeleton film crew, lots of real home video footage and personal photos and managed to pull off an artistic trifeca of writing, starring and directing her first film. 0n the surface, the story ...

réalisé par: Orson Welles

Chroniques et points de vue:Additional Features:No minuscule 'featurette' for the greatest movie ever made. The backbone for this grand two-disc set is the 1995 0scar®-nominated documentary The Battle over Citizen Kane, a very rich two-hour film on how this masterpiece was almost destroyed by Welles's adversary, William Randolph Hearst. A great remastered print is complemented by two running commentaries, the better one by critic Roger Ebert. Don't think you want a two-hour lecture by Mr. Ebert? Just listen to his 10-minute talk over the gallery of photographs from the movie (which you ...

We've covered in too much detail how it's some sort of "open season" on Vonage when it comes to VoIP patents. After dealing with ridiculous and expensive patent lawsuits from companies who failed to actually innovate in the same way Vonage did, the company was pressured by Wall Street to quickly settle the various patent lawsuits filed against the company. Of course, rather than settle matters, that simply opened the door for other companies to go searching through their patent portfolios to see if there was anything they could sue Vonage over. Indeed, following those settlements it didn't take long for AT&T to dig up a patent and sue -- which was quickly settled as well. Thought things were over? No such luck. Nortel just showed up last month to sue and it took all of about a week and a half for Vonage to settle that case as well.

The Nortel case is slightly different because Vonage actually already had a patent infringement lawsuit going against Nortel, but it wasn't really initiated by Vonage. Instead, it had been initiated by a patent holding firm that Vonage bought in 2006. The end result of the settlement doesn't involve money changing hands, but just a cross licensing agreement for the patents. So what's the big lesson that Vonage and others have learned from this? It's certainly got nothing to do with innovating. It's to hoard as many patents as possible so that you have your own nuclear stockpile for when someone else sues you. Want to know why the USPTO is overwhelmed? It's not because there aren't enough examiners (as some will claim) or that there aren't enough funds. It's because the way the system now works is that you are supposed to file patents on every tiny little advancement so you can use it to protect yourself against lawsuits from everyone else. That's not about innovation. It's about waste. In the meantime, since it's still open season at Vonage, who's going to be next? There are a ton of other patents in the VoIP space that can surely be used in a lawsuit, right?

Small and light enough for a shirt pocket, Samsung's Helix YX-M1 is a one-stop audio entertainment center with an XM radio, a digital music player, and room for 50 hours of tunes, but it comes up short on battery life.

This raw work-flow application isn't the Holy Grail many hoped it would be, but Apple Aperture 1.5 could make life easier for photographers who need to cull, retouch, and output large numbers of photographs quickly and efficiently.
